It
might be due to Mars great approach to the Earth that Kuma-cicadas
have been crying in downtown Osaka even on the 30th of August.
On that day, I visited Gallery R.P in the heat of a late summer
afternoon after a long time. A display window
is one of the characteristics of this gallery. In it, confined
gray cement-like stuffed animals caught my eyes. Wondering what
the world was going on in here, I opened the door. Gray world
on the floor came into my view. That is"It`s a Small World".
For a while I looked around with birds-eye-view threading my
way to visit each small world. These objects installed
right on the floor are stuffed animals, toys and some other everyday
products that signify children and the circumstances of their
lives that are sacrificed by war and terrorism repeated in many
places of the world. Mr.Nakatani ,the artist,
has resided in San Diego, California, for about 25 years. He
teaches and produces and shows his works. The
artist was deeply affected by the incidents of 9/11 and conflicts
that followed. It was then that his work began expressing his
humanitarian views and his dislike of war.
Last year (2002) he showed the same type of work at Gallery Nishiri
in Kyoto which was a little more direct expression on anti-war
: the mosaic of a crashed combat helicopter installed on the
wall. The wreckage of it spread over the floor in pieces. This
had more impact and was conceptually significant. Next
year (2004) his one person exhibition is scheduled at Gallery
Blanche in Ikeda-city Osaka. He took a year for preparation for
this show, I heard. I am looking forward to next show.
